Sorry folks – life has been so busy the last couple of weeks! Just wanted to update a tiny bit. Found these fun (and somewhat creepy) markings under layers of wall, and again under the ceiling (standing in the same place but looking upward). I can only assume they were put there by someone intending to count. I don’t know for sure though, because one area has a slash through 4 lines (traditionally meaning 5) while another area has a slash through only 3 lines… So I’d have to call that a failure on the counting front.
Whoever did it has succeeded, however, in fueling my imagination and I now have a visual of somebody being trapped back here, tracking the days/weeks/months and slowly going mad, thus creating the counting discrepancy. Sooo there’s that.
Jess, exactly where are you looking? I have some thoughts, but it depends on where you are examining. Keep up the good work. Sharon
If this truly was a part of the underground railroad, maybe these markings were counts for the number of slaves rescued. Maybe that odd count (3 lines with a slash) was the last group that passed through to freedom. Just thinking….
