*Edit/Addendum: I’ve realized that on the computer, images look fine. Sometimes, however, some images are upside-down when the post is viewed on a cell phone. On my end, there is no indication this is happening so I apologize! If anyone has any idea why it’s happening (or better yet, how to fix it), please shoot me a message.
Phew! Apologies for the hiatus. Fresh off a combined work/family trip to Orlando, things are FINALLY slowing down a bit life-wise. Got real hectic there for a bit. You know there’s a lot going on when “slowing down” means diving full on into a total-house overhaul ha! Now that we can focus a bit more, we’ve been working hard on getting the interior of the house really started. Which means lots of time spent picking paint colors and lighting fixtures etc. It’s a lot of work transforming it back into a home after it being a school for so long. But it has been SO much fun. I never imagined being in a position to be able to do these things so it’s very exciting. I promise to also detail all of my decorating decisions in my next post!
One new area of work has been the living room. I’m very anxious to complete a space for the girls to be able to play in while we try to get some things done. So, we’ve made the living room a priority. Two of the plaster walls were really leaning and crumbling so we’ve removed these and will be replacing them once we wire some lighting….

Can you believe there was nothing in these walls? Not even a shred of insulation. The only things I found were a handful of curly wood shavings, probably from when all of these planks were hand-planed. Then, I found about 8 of these mysterious (and very heavy) things peeking out from under the windows…
My curiosity had me immediately pulling them out (the ropes were not attached to anything) and they were much longer and heavier than I anticipated. They are each at least a foot long. Then, as I suddenly realized I had absolutely no idea what they were, I quickly put them back in fearing they were there for an important purpose and perhaps the house may collapse without them. Ha, I told you I am a rookie.
I found out that they are simply window sash weights, which were used to keep windows up. Some really old ones are made of lead, though I think these ones are cast iron. Not very sure though. When these windows were replaced, someone simply cut the ropes and let them fall into the wall. I am trying to come up with a creative way to use these things but they are pretty darn heavy.
On a different note, I met with Sharon Clark (the former owner of the property) the other day and we looked through old documents, maps, and photos she had collected from the house’s history. It was so fascinating. I had such a nice time and will never tire of learning about who has come through here. Thank you again, Sharon! My favorite is seeing old photographs of people around the house. She gave me a copy of this one – check out those dresses on the ladies out front…

If you look behind the house, you’ll notice a couple of barn-like structures as well as a windmill. These apparently burned down at some point along the way; though several years back, the Clark School built a barn-like structure (for more classroom space) which perfectly emulates these former buildings. Thankfully the house was not affected by that fire, but what a close call!
This one is also on the internet somewhere but I want to put it in this post too, since it might be my favorite Porter-Bradstreet picture…
I just love how you can see the hay in what is now the breezeway, as well as the buggy parked there. I also love the two guys on the porch and plan to continue their legacy when I park myself there this summer, who’s with me?! For posterity’s sake, I’ll need at least one person to lurk in the corner like the guy in the white pants…
I promise I’ve already been working on another post summarizing some of the decorative/cosmetic plans for around the house so stay tuned!
